How to find your Stripe effective rate

Your effective rate is your total Stripe fees divided by your total card volume for the same period. It's the single number that makes pricing comparable.

  1. In the Stripe Dashboard, open Reports (or Balance) and choose a full period, ideally the last three complete months.
  2. Note the total gross volume of card payments for that period.
  3. Note the total fees for the same period. Include processing fees and product fees such as Billing, Radar and Tax.
  4. Divide fees by volume and multiply by 100.

Effective rate = total fees ÷ total card volume × 100

Example: $187,500 in fees on $6,250,000 of volume in a quarter is an effective rate of 3.00%. Enter 3.0 in the calculator above, or switch to "Total fees paid" and type the dollar amounts directly.

What a lower effective rate is worth per year

Small differences in rate become large numbers at scale. Each 0.10 percentage point on $25M of card volume is $25,000 a year.

What each difference in effective rate costs per year
Annual card volume0.10 pt0.25 pt0.50 pt0.71 pt
$10,000,000$10,000$25,000$50,000$71,000
$25,000,000$25,000$62,500$125,000$177,500
$50,000,000$50,000$125,000$250,000$355,000
$100,000,000$100,000$250,000$500,000$710,000

Plain arithmetic: volume × rate difference. No assumptions about your pricing.

Stripe fee questions

Is the calculator result a quote?

No. The calculator uses a simple model to show the average savings we can make for your volume and industry. The exact proposal comes after we review your statements and learn about your business.

Why is my effective rate above 2.9%?

Stripe's standard online card rate is 2.9% plus 30 cents per charge (as of October 2026). The 30 cents is a bigger share of small transactions, and surcharges for international cards (+1.5%) and currency conversion (+1%), plus products like Stripe Billing (0.7%), all add to the total. Divide total fees by total volume and most merchants on standard pricing land above 3%.

What volume do I need?

Our analysis is built for merchants processing $10M or more a year in card payments. Below that, the biggest win is usually negotiating with Stripe directly or trimming surcharges and add-ons. Our guide on how to negotiate Stripe fees walks through it.

How much does Stripe charge per transaction?

On standard US pricing, Stripe charges 2.9% + 30¢ for each successful online card payment (as of October 2026). On a $100 payment that is $3.20, so you receive $96.80. International cards add 1.5%, currency conversion adds 1%, and manually entered cards cost 3.4% + 30¢.

How do I calculate Stripe fees?

Multiply the payment amount by 2.9% and add 30¢: fee = amount × 0.029 + $0.30. Add 1.5% for international cards and 1% if a currency conversion is needed. For your overall cost, divide your total Stripe fees by your total card volume for the same period. That is your effective rate.

How much should I charge to cover Stripe fees?

To receive a set amount after fees, divide the amount plus 30¢ by 0.971: charge = (amount + $0.30) ÷ (1 − 0.029). To receive $100, charge $103.30. Check local rules before adding a surcharge: card network rules and some US states limit surcharging, and debit cards can't be surcharged.

Are fees returned when I refund a payment?

Under Stripe's standard pricing, the original processing fee is not returned when you refund a payment. At high refund volumes this adds up, and it is one of the line items we check in an analysis.

Does Stripe charge monthly fees?

Stripe's standard pricing has no monthly or setup fee for card processing. Costs come per transaction, plus fees for optional products such as Billing, Radar for Fraud Teams, Tax and Connect.

How to calculate the Stripe fee on a payment

Multiply the payment by 2.9% and add 30¢. Add 1.5% for an international card and 1% when a currency conversion is needed.

Stripe fee = amount × 2.9% + $0.30

Example: a $250 payment costs $250 × 0.029 + $0.30 = $7.55. You receive $242.45. The same payment on an international card costs $11.30.

$5,000$145.30$4,854.702.91%$220.30

The 30¢ fixed fee is why small payments cost more in percentage terms: 5.90% on a $10 payment against 2.91% on $5,000.

How much to charge to cover Stripe fees

To receive a set amount after fees, add 30¢ and divide by 0.971.

Charge = (amount you want + $0.30) ÷ (1 − 0.029)

To receive $100, charge $103.30. Simply adding 2.9% + 30¢ to the price falls a few cents short, because Stripe also takes 2.9% of the amount you added. Before passing fees on, check the rules: card networks and some US states limit surcharges, and debit cards can't be surcharged.
